Custom Handling Systems

Steel Storage Systems’ broad engineering and manufacturing capabilities are often utilized by clients to design and produce special handling systems. Our talent to engineer and build complete custom designs along with automated controls with a focus on metals applications is unique to the industry.

Below are examples of some custom installations.

Beam Splitter

Beam Splitter

A special Beam Splitter device has been developed to split beams into tees in conjunction with a rotary shear process. The Splitter features fixed and powered blocks that form a vice for the beam causing it to break into tees. The Beam Splitter is incorporated into a Transfer Conveyor.

The operation is such that the Transfer will lift a scored beam off the rotary shear exit roller table and position it against the Splitter’s stationary block, which is adjustable to minimize the cylinder stroke and travel (for narrow vs wider beams).

The powered block would engage and “snap” the beam into tees. The blocks are just 2” high to be below the beam’s web and have a pinch effect.

The Transfer Conveyor not only facilitates the beam positioning but also provides accumulation space for the resulting tees.

Exit and Packaging Lines

Steel Storage has designed and installed several tube mill Exit and Packaging Lines.  Each system is tailored to handle a range of sizes and lengths.  The system can package both structural and mechanical tubing and in multiple bundle configurations.  They are integrated to the mill to match speed and size, and have automated controls.


Bundle Stacking System

Bundle Stackers

These devices function as fork lift stands to stack bundles of tubing for offload staging.  They are incorporated into a tube mill packaging exit line for finished bundles.  They lift a bundle above the exit conveyor for a subsequent bundle to pass underneath then place the raised bundle on top of the bundle below it.  The process is repeated until three mill bundles are stacked.  The overhead crane now picks three bundles at once rather than just one.

The system is an integrated feed for tubes to two turning machines and a vertical mill.  A tube conveys to the first turning center for threading the right end, then to the second turning center to thread the left end, and on to the mill for scalloping the surface.

Tubes are conveyed in a continuing sequence from a furnace to a straightener, an eddy current tester, a saw, and a deburring machine.
